Choosing the right real estate agent is one of the most important decisions you will have to make when the time comes to sell your family home or investment property.  You will need an agent you are going to feel comfortable with, as you will be working closely with them during the selling process.  Therefore it isn't a decision to be made lightly.

Many house sellers make their choice of real estate agent for the wrong reasons.  The attraction of "no advertising costs" or "discount commission" or the agent who may be "buying the listing" with an inflated recommended list price can be very tempting.  As with any major financial decision, this is a time to do your homework.

The first factor in choosing a real estate agent is looking for one with experience.  In this sense, an agent with "for sale" signs in the area or with vast local knowledge is a good indication.  But remember, other factors come into play too.  Look for a real estate company that has been in business successfully for a number of years and has a sound reputation.  Ask about properties they have marketed and sold in the past.  If you have the opportunity, speak with home owners who have sold a property recently - would they use their agent again?  Good real estate agents generally have a "brag list" of satisfied clients, but it pays to conduct your own research.
